26.1&2 Networks and Internet Review Assignment - Part 2

  • Related concepts:
    • The Internet is a computer network consisting of interconnected networks that use standardized, open (nonproprietary) communication protocols. 
    • Access to the Internet depends on the ability to connect a computing device to an Internet-connected device.
    • A protocol is an agreed-upon set of rules that specify the behavior of a system.
    • The protocols used in the Internet are open, which allows users to easily connect additional computing devices to the Internet.
    • Routing on the Internet is usually dynamic; it is not specified in advance.
    • The scalability of a system is the capacity for the system to change in size and scale to meet new demands. 
    • The Internet was designed to be scalable.

26.3 Traceroute in Class Discussion

  • Use the traceroute program (explanation in the video description on YouTube) and compare the ping times for multiple websites
  • Find two to focus on where the physical distance is greater but the ping time is shorter
  • In partners, have them discuss reasons for or causes of the disparity

26.5 Protecting Personal Information when Online - Using the Explore Teachers Resource

  • These concepts have cropped up regularly throughout the courses but are always worth reviewing.  It will also serve as a review of the ethics concepts earlier in the unit.
  • Complete the Collecting Data task from the Explore Teachers Resource.  Note that the aboutmyinfo.org site used only works fully within the United States.  (I hope to find a Canadian equivalent soon.)
